once upon a time, this was a zimmermans note track - maya had been using the bassline on her korg microsynth, and chris sang over it. i never quite got that bass progression out of my head, and it kept coming back to me. it re-emerged a few times, including in a one-off electronic project i called “team excel”.
when KPL asked me to write some pieces for their mini documentary "the city at war", this was one of the first ideas i played with to set a tone. without going into details, i will say that writing that soundtrack became part of a grieving process, and i think much of the mournfulness in those cello pieces came from my personal life rather than the film itself.
the original mix appears on the full soundtrack, which i released under my nikku neko moniker with the title “les anees folles”. this mix was an attempt to create the stereo field of a string ensemble, with the cellos and basses on the right, the violas center, and the violins to the left. i ended up liking the pop mix better, but here this one remains.
