chauffi Listening to this album is like being in the room while someone figures it out. It's intimate, yes, but there is a sense of something amazing happening, of knowing the songs will be worked over and iterated upon, but you are there at their beginnings, hearing them be born. It's addictive, really. I find myself returning to this album when I myself am feeling creatively stuck, allowing myself a moment to bask in the process of someone else, so I can be inspired to do my own. Favorite track: oh, princess! (windmills demo).

about

these eleven tracks are a miniature (and secret) history of what falls between the cracks in 17 years of home recording. this is a map of my ramshackle recordings, my rickety songs, my warbly voice. all of these songs are missing pieces gleaned from email correspondences, web storage, old cassettes and cranky harddrives. they are all incomplete, imperfect, and unpolished. they stand for all the things we leave behind that we can never fix or correct.

when i decided it was time to return to recording, i thought the best way to inaugurate a new age of creative endeavors was to recognize the work i'd left behind. the past dictates the future here, and it feels like releasing the ghosts makes for a clearer path forward. i hope it gives a slight indication of the places i plan to go in the ensuing years.

these songs wouldn't be possible without the support of my two best friends, dereck and megan, whose input was invaluable while i collated material.

this album is dedicated to kristina and erin, two wonderful people who are no longer with us and are dearly missed.
